The movie Plankton is just that—a full-length story about SpongeBob's adversary. It provides an entertaining, independent adventure and, in a sense, an origin story for Plankton and Karen. This SpongeBob film remains rooted in the universe we know and love, in contrast to its predecessors, which frequently transport the characters far beyond Bikini Bottom. What was the outcome? Rather than being an overblown, inappropriate journey, the movie feels more like the classic SpongeBob cartoon. And to be honest, it's worth it.
Plankton the Movie is a love story, although a humorously malevolent one. After putting up with Plankton's bullshit for twenty-five years, Karen (Jill Talley) decides to take over the world on her own. Thanks to a comic book he read, SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) assists Plankton in reflecting on their relationship in the most SpongeBob way possible as an armchair psychotherapist.
The way the movie strikes a balance between its formula for both new and experienced viewers is one of its strong points. For those who may not be familiar with the actors, the first scenes serve as an introduction, but the film soon becomes Plankton: The Movie Afdah. Long-time fans will enjoy the story's many references, but new readers—especially young ones—can easily pick up the plot and not feel lost.
