The first trailer for Toy Story 5 has finally dropped and it is both nostalgic and very very surprising. This next installment of the beloved series will not only see the return of Woody and Buzz. Instead it will see them in a world that is almost unrecognizable from the one they knew before.
The threat in this next installment of the series will not come from a toy collector or a daycare center. Instead it will come from technology.
The trailer begins with a shot of Bonnie’s room but something is different. The shelves are untouched. The floor is empty. Bonnie is sitting on her bed her eyes glued to a glowing tablet computer. Buzz is watching from across the room a look of confusion on his face. Woody is observing the silence where laughter once was.
Jessie soon follows breaking the tension. She refuses to believe that playtime has just changed without them. This causes the three to wonder about their relevance in a world of high technology smart devices virtual reality headsets and AI powered entertainment.
Pixar Animation Studios uses contrast in their visuals. The soft, warm textures of the toys contrast with the bright glowing screens and metal gadgets. In addition the lighting appears crisper and colder whenever technology is featured. This serves to emphasize the emotional chasm between old and new play.
The trailer does not depict technology as simply the bad guy. Rather it implies a more complex struggle between relevance and identity. Woody has a very strong statement about purpose reminding the group that being there for a child has always been more important than being the latest toy on the market. This is very impactful.
The narrative also implies new characters. Quick cuts show high tech interactive toys that respond immediately to voice commands. These new toys seem very confident and efficient. However they do not have the emotional depth that Woody and Buzz possess. Thus it appears that the movie will examine what truly makes a toy significant.
Action packed moments whizz by such as a rescue mission in a smart home system that seems to have more control than just lighting and music. Buzz takes center stage in these moments while Jessie displays grit and determination. While the stakes seem higher than ever the soul of the story remains personal.
It is worth noting that the trailer strikes a balance between humor and reflection. A brief moment of humor comes with a joke about Rex and a voice assistant. However other moments such as Woody reminiscing about old times, provide the emotional foundation. It is this balance that makes the movie feel earthy despite the sci fi setting.
Ultimately Toy Story 5 seems to pose a simple yet profound question what happens when tradition clashes with innovation? The series has long been about change, whether it is Andy growing up or Woody learning to be independent. However this installment addresses an even more profound change: the change that is occurring in childhood itself.
If the trailer is any indication of what the movie will bring this sequel may very well become one of the most relevant films in the series. It does not simply count on the nostalgia factor. Rather it pits well loved characters against the need to adapt to evolve and to find a new purpose once again.
Woody Buzz and Jessie could very well be facing extinction in a digital world. However if there is one thing that history has shown it is that heart and friendship are timeless you can watch this movie soon on afdah movie.
