In the early days of World War II, Hitler was bombing Britain, and all the locals could do was take refuge in underground tunnels and bunkers and hope for the best. Director Steve McQueen takes the audience back to those horrific times by starting his new film, Blitz, in the middle of the attack. Firefighters are desperately trying to put out fires that have gotten out of control, but the situation is hopeless and more bombs seem to be on the way. Soon the scene shifts to a series of images: there's a close-up of what appears to be flowing water, a still frame, and a quiet shot of black and white daffodils, before a piano melody takes over and moves the story to the protagonists' hometown. It's good to see McQueen hasn't lost his experimental flair, but these moments are only a brief respite from the harsh reality of watching the war from your front door. Rita (Saoirse Ronan), her piano-playing father Gerald (musician Paul Weller), and their precocious nine-year-old son George (Elliot Heffernan) live in a working-class neighborhood besieged by German bombings. Worried about her son's safety, Rita drives him to the countryside, but George, already tired of being bullied on the train and homesick, jumps from the locomotive and begins the arduous journey home. Meanwhile, Rita struggles with a demanding job at a factory, volunteers at a nearby homeless shelter, and reminisces about the all-too-brief time she spent with George's father before news of her son's disappearance plunges the world into further chaos.
